Update: This trick still works with MacOS High Sierra and Mojave 10.14+.
Apple likes their computers quite so they leave the fans off for as long as possible. This could harmful if you are doing intense work or gaming in a hot location. I use SMC Fan Control to kick up the fans before the system get’s too hot.
Sadly SMC Fan Control stopped working after the High Sierra update, on my MacBook Pro 2013. If you have the same issue then try to reset the System Management Controller (SMC Reset).
Once you reset the Mac SMC, then the SMC Fan Control App should begin working again.
So let’s fix SMC Fan Control
It’s really here and I couldn’t have displayed it better than Save Apple Dollars YouTube video.
Shutdown your Mac
Hold down Shift + Control + Option and the Power button for 5 seconds.
Notice the light on your mac charger change in colors.
That’s it! Log back in and you should have fixed the SMC Fan Control!
Reset the PRAM
Resetting the PRAM can also help fix smcfancontrol issues.
- When your Macbook is shut down hold Option + Command + P + R and the Power Button at the same time.
- Wait for the Mac to turn on, KEEP holding the buttons, you will hear the boot sound effect and it will reboot as you hold.
- Let go of the buttons after you hear the second boot sound.
- It should now turn on as normal
Hope it worked! My MacBook Pro is finally running cool again, is yours?
